How to Navigate the Holidays with an Unexpected Pregnancy

The holidays should be a fun time of family get-togethers, parties, and delicious food, but if you’re facing an unexpected pregnancy, it can be tricky to enjoy the celebrations. If you’re worried about navigating time with nosy relatives, pregnancy symptoms, and an uncertain future, we’re here to help.

The key to surviving the holidays is to set boundaries for yourself and those around you. If you need someone to talk to, contact the team at Sound Choices for a free and confidential appointment.

Here are some tips:

Set Boundaries For Yourself

Some women feel every sign of pregnancy from the very beginning, while others feel nothing for weeks or months. Early pregnancy symptoms include fatigue, feeling nauseous, and moodiness.

You need to determine your limit in advance. Practicing self-care will go a long way in helping you through the holidays.

If you feel overwhelmed, bow out of family gatherings and parties without needing an excuse. The holidays can be exhausting enough without the added physical and emotional pressure of pregnancy.

Set Boundaries For Others

If you’ve shared the news about your pregnancy with your partner and certain friends or family members, ask them not to discuss your future plans over the holidays. Let them know that you will share that information when the time feels right.

If the announcement leaks out, have a trusted friend or family member stick close to you. They can run interference and conveniently change the subject when others have questions.

Unfortunately, you can’t control what others say and think, but you can control how you respond. The decision about how to handle your unexpected pregnancy is yours and yours alone. Others may share their opinions, but you’re free to say, “Thanks, but I’ll decide what’s best for me and my future.”

You’re Not Alone

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), two in five Americans report that their stress levels increase during the holidays. People worry about the financial cost of gifts, avoiding conflict with family, and missing loved ones.

Keeping the secret of your unexpected pregnancy during the holidays is challenging, especially if you are showing. Once again, you don’t owe anyone an explanation.

Do the Things You Love

As you plan to celebrate, remember to do all the things that are important to you. Decorating, baking, or watching specific Christmas movies can bring a sense of joy. Even lighting a fresh holiday candle can add to the moment.

Take time, put your feet up, practice self-care, and create boundaries. The holidays will be here and gone before you know it.
