Medical abortion uses powerful drugs to end a pregnancy. If you have an unplanned pregnancy and are considering this option, it’s crucial to learn everything you can and make an informed decision.

In the meantime, keep reading to learn more about medical abortion.

How This Method Works

Medical abortion (also known as the abortion pill) is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation. This method typically involves two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone is taken first, and it blocks a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone supports pregnancy growth and development, and without it, the pregnancy will detach from the uterine lining and end.

Misoprostol is taken 24 to 48 hours later. It causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body.

Taking these drugs will cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, but other side effects can occur. These side effects include:

  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

What to Consider

Taking abortion drugs comes with certain risks to be aware of, including the following:

  • Digestive symptoms (i.e., upset stomach)
  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (some of the pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus, which may require a surgical procedure)

Additionally, it’s critical to review your health history with a medical provider and receive an ultrasound. The latter allows you to confirm essential pregnancy information, such as whether the pregnancy is progressing, where it is located, and how far along you are.

Sound Choices Pregnancy Clinic offers limited ultrasounds and options information. We’ll help you learn more about your pregnancy and carefully weigh your options.
