About the Abortion Pill

The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, is an FDA-approved method for ending a pregnancy up to 10 weeks gestation. This process involves taking two medications over 24-48 hours:

  • Mifepristone: This drug is typically taken in an abortion clinic and works by blocking progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy.
  • Misoprostol: Taken later at home, this drug causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

In Georgia, abortion is prohibited after six weeks of pregnancy, except in specific cases such as when the mother’s life is at risk, when the pregnancy is medically deemed nonviable, or in cases of rape or incest (with a police report filed).

Could the Abortion Pill Be Unsafe for Me?

Certain factors may increase health risks or lead to complications if taking the abortion pill. A medical evaluation is critical to determine if this method is medically appropriate. Some situations that require special consideration include:

  • Your pregnancy is beyond 10 weeks of gestation.
  • You have a suspected ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the uterus, which can be life-threatening).
  • You have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place.
  • You have a history of bleeding disorders, heart conditions, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or uncontrolled seizure disorders.
  • You take blood thinners or certain steroid medications.
  • You are unable to attend follow-up appointments or access emergency care if needed.
  • You have known allergies to the medications used in the abortion pill process.

An ultrasound is an essential first step because these and other medical concerns may impact your safety. An ultrasound confirms how far along you are, verifies the pregnancy’s location, and checks for viability (whether the pregnancy is developing).
