An Ultrasound Shows You Important Details

An ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of structures inside the body. During an early pregnancy ultrasound, the exam can provide information that a pregnancy test alone cannot.

A limited ultrasound may help determine:

  • How far along you are by providing an estimate of gestational age
  • Where the pregnancy is developing by looking at whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
  • Whether the pregnancy shows signs of development, including cardiac activity when visible

After the scan, a medical professional can explain the findings, answer your questions, and let you know whether further evaluation is recommended.

How This Information Affects Your Pregnancy Care

Knowing what is happening with your pregnancy can help you understand what medical follow-up care you may need, if any, and can affect your options.

An ectopic pregnancy, which develops outside the uterus, requires medical evaluation and treatment. An ectopic pregnancy can initially feel like a normal early pregnancy, so the condition may go unrecognized without an ultrasound. A ruptured fallopian tube can cause severe internal bleeding.

An ultrasound may also provide information about whether a pregnancy may have ended in miscarriage by assessing cardiac activity and other signs of pregnancy development.

Around 10-20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. If you have miscarried, the focus then shifts to specific follow-up medical care.

Your last period does not always tell the whole story. If your cycles are irregular, you may ovulate earlier or later from one month to the next, making it harder to estimate how far along you are without an ultrasound.

If you are considering parenting, adoption, or abortion, our advocates can provide information about each option. You can also ask questions about the support available to you.

You do not have to navigate an unplanned pregnancy without support.
